Nintendo Officially Confirms Backwards Compatibility For Switch Successor
Nintendo has officially confirmed that backwards compatibility is a feature in the upcoming Switch successor. This is the first time Nintendo has openly confirmed the feature. Up to now, Nintendo has stated that a new console is in development at the company. However, it hasn’t shared anything regarding its features.
We know Nintendo has said in the past that the Nintendo Switch Online service would carry over to the Switch successor. The company openly commented on how players would transition from the Switch to the new hardware seamlessly thanks to their online account. The latest financial report from Nintendo has backed this up with confirmation of both the service and games on the new console.
On one slide found in the presentation, Nintendo states “Nintendo Switch Software Will Also Be Playable on the Successor to Nintendo Switch”. The slide continues to list other features:
– Furthermore, Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.
– In addition to being able to play Nintendo Switch software they currently own, consumers will be able to choose their next purchase from a broad selection of titles released for Nintendo Switch.
– Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch I explained today, will be announced at a later date.
Soon after the report was published, the Nintendo X account also posted a statement from President Shuntaro Furukawa. It reads:
This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.
All previous reports did point to backwards compatibility on the Switch successor. However, during early leaks, sources claimed that Nintendo was having a tough time getting Switch games to run on the new hardware. This was due to the console’s new NVIDIA SoC that didn’t have any emulation mode for Switch games.
The news might not be surprising but it is still great to see. We still don’t know when Nintendo plans on unveiling the Switch successor. New reports claim it will still be announced before the end of 2025.
